You've got the wing in your hands, box open on the garage floor, and you set it on the trunk lid to eyeball it before you commit. The center touches down fine. Then you look at the ends. One side leaves a sliver of daylight under the mounting foot, the other rocks a little when you press on it. That gap is the whole problem with a universal wing on a Camaro, and no amount of double-sided tape or shimming makes it go away, because the part was never shaped for that trunk in the first place.
Look at the decklid on a fifth- or sixth-gen Camaro from the side. It isn't flat. It crowns in the middle and rolls off toward the quarter panels, and the profile changes again as it runs back toward the taillights. Every generation and body style has its own version of that curve. A convertible deck sits differently than a coupe. The ZL1's rear treatment isn't the SS's.
A universal wing is built to a compromise. It has to sit on a Honda, a Subaru, a Mustang, and a Camaro, so it's shaped to none of them. The mounting feet are set at some average spacing, at some average angle, on a base that's usually close to flat. Drop that onto a lid that crowns and rolls, and physics does the rest. Where the lid's curve is steeper than the wing's base, the ends lift. Where it's flatter, the middle bears all the load. You end up chasing contact with washers and adhesive, and even when you get it "stuck," the eye still reads it as tacked-on because the gap under the ends catches shadow.
The other half of the problem is underneath, where you can't see it until you're already committed. A Camaro trunk lid has a specific inner structure: ribs, contours, and reinforced areas where a bolt-on foot actually has something solid to grab. A part designed for that exact car puts its mounting points over that structure on purpose. Whether it's a no-drill adhesive base or a bolt-through, the footprint lines up with where the lid is strongest and where the surface curve matches.
A universal wing doesn't know any of that. Its feet land wherever they land. Sometimes that's over a flat, supported spot. Often it's half on a rib and half off it, or right where the lid has the most flex. If you drill for it, you're putting holes in locations the wing chose, not locations that suit the car, and that's a decision you can't take back. That's the difference between a spoiler that sits flush and settled and one you're always aware of, the one that hums a little at highway speed because the base never made full contact.
When a spoiler is manufactured for, say, the sixth-gen Camaro coupe, the base is molded to that decklid's crown and rolloff. The feet are spaced and angled to meet the lid where it's meant to be met. Set it down and the contact is even end to end, so the part looks like it grew out of the trunk instead of landing on it. That's what OEM-style means here: designed to follow the factory body lines so it reads factory-clean, even though it's an aftermarket part and not a factory-original piece.

What model-specific design does is shrink that gap to something small and manageable instead of the end-lifting, foot-hanging fight a universal wing hands you.
Trim is where Camaro buyers trip, because the badge on the back doesn't tell the whole story. An SS, an LT, a ZL1, and a convertible can each want a different part, and drilling requirements vary by trim too, so a style that's no-drill on one car may not be on another. Before you order, confirm your exact year, make, model, and trim. If you're planning to have it painted to match, pull your factory paint code off the sticker in your driver's-side door jamb, that little six-character code like WA501Q, and verify it before checkout so the color match comes out right. While you're at it, it's worth understanding what a paint code actually is and where manufacturers put it, since it's the single input that decides your color match. Once the fit is handled, the finish is a preference, not a compromise. Order it in primer if you'd rather paint it yourself or blend it in with other work you're doing. Painted parts take a little longer to leave the door because the paint needs to dry, and primer parts move out faster. That daylight under the ends isn't something you fix at install. It's something you avoid at order, by starting with a part shaped for the exact car it's going on.
