You crouch down next to the fender, run your thumb along the base of the scoop, and there it is: a gap you could slide a business card into on one corner. From ten feet away it looks fine. Up close, the thing reads like it landed on the hood instead of growing out of it. That gap, that little lift at one end, is the whole story of why a scoop looks aftermarket instead of factory, and it almost always traces back to two things: whether the part was built for your exact hood, and how it was mounted.
Here's the part that surprises people. A scoop that won't sit flat usually isn't sitting wrong because someone rushed the install. It's sitting wrong because the underside of the scoop and the curve of the hood were never shaped to meet each other in the first place.
Every hood has its own crown, its own contour, the subtle way it rises toward the center and falls off toward the fenders. A scoop molded to follow that specific contour lays down along its whole footprint. A generic piece meant to cover "most cars" is built to an average that matches no car exactly, so it touches the hood in the middle and lifts at the ends, or the reverse. You can press it, tape it, weight it down while the adhesive cures, and it'll still want to spring back to the shape it was molded in. Fiberglass and ABS have memory. They hold the form they were built with, and no amount of clamping talks them out of it for good.
That's the core of the difference between a universal scoop and a model-specific one, and it's the reason DAR builds parts for a specific year, make, and model rather than shipping one shell that's supposed to work everywhere. When the part already agrees with the shape of your hood, the mounting job stops fighting physics.
A scoop can be genuinely bolted down through the hood and still look like it's floating if the base doesn't follow the sheet metal. The hardware holds it in place; it doesn't force a mismatched shape to conform. On the flip side, a well-matched no-drill scoop mounted with adhesive can look poured into the hood, because the base is already meeting the metal along its full length before the tape ever grabs.
So the goal isn't "bolts vs. tape." The goal is a base profile that matches your hood. Get that right and both mounting methods look clean. Get it wrong and neither one saves you. DAR scoops install one of two ways depending on the part, bolt-on "drill" or stick-on "no-drill" adhesive, and many styles are no-drill on most trims. But the reason they lay flat isn't the mounting method. It's that the piece was molded to the contour of the hood it's going on.
Whichever way your scoop mounts, dry-fit it first. Set it on the hood with no adhesive backing exposed and no hardware started, and look at the base all the way around. You want even, consistent contact along the perimeter. Kneel down and sight across the hood at eye level so you can see daylight, or the absence of it, under the edges.
This is also where the honest part of aftermarket comes in. Even a model-specific part in fiberglass or ABS can want minor adjustment, because these are molded parts, not stampings pulled off the same line as your hood. Model-specific design is what minimizes that adjustment. It doesn't erase it. A small tweak during a careful test-fit is normal and expected. A giant gap you're trying to muscle closed is a sign the part wasn't built for that hood in the first place, and that's a different problem entirely.

The whole thing starts before the box ships. Hood contours and mounting points can differ between trims on the same model and same year, and trim is the detail that quietly decides whether a part drops on clean or fights you.
